While the language is fairly organized and often simple to pick up, there are a few things folks need to remember when they learn Spanish grammar. Four main grammatical rules will tend to trip up new people – identifying the type of word, determining the correct tense of verbs, putting a sentence together properly and using the proper genders.

Being able to determine what type of word you are looking at will make it much easier to decipher the language. Keep in mind, in Spanish the adjective often follows the noun, which is the opposite of how English is spoken. Pay close attention to the accents as well, as this item may be the only difference between one word and another.

Verb formation is probably the most difficult thing to study for those people who want to learn Spanish grammar. Since all of the regular verbs are conjugated the same way, you only have to memorize the irregular verbs and how they are conjugated. Also, keep in mind when you learn Spanish grammar the most commonly used tenses are present, past and future. While you will eventually want to study all 14 tenses, knowing these three will allow you to communicate in most instances.

Another difficulty people have when they learn Spanish grammar is putting the sentences together in the proper order. Generally speaking, you would put the parts of the sentence the same way you would in English. The biggest exception to this rule is when using adjectives. In Spanish, the adjectives will almost always follow the noun instead of preceding it.

If the previous things were not enough to make it difficult to learn Spanish grammar, then there is the last consideration of the words having gender. This concept is strange to many English speakers. As you learn Spanish grammar, pay close attention to the genders of the nouns. These words will help you determine the proper adjectives and articles to use with them. For single nouns, the adjectives and articles must also be single and of the same gender. For plural nouns, the adjectives and articles are always plural and masculine unless the group is entirely made up of feminine nouns.
